The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, or ShenZhong Link, the world's first long-distance dual eight-lane underwater tunnel, has seen a total traffic volume exceeding 31.55 million vehicles since opening last year, according to local transportation authorities.

The project began service on June 30, 2024. It plays a pioneering role in promoting the efficient integration and development of the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Estuary and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The daily average traffic volume also reached 86,400 vehicles, accounting for about one-fifth of the total daily cross-river traffic at the Pearl River Estuary.

The link directly connects Qianhai in Shenzhen, Nansha in Guangzhou, and the Cuiheng New District in Zhongshan, Guangdong province. Cross-city bus and tourism lines connecting Shenzhen to Zhongshan and Nansha have been opened.

"The Shenzhen-Zhongshan bus line has carried nearly 2.8 million passengers," said Sun Rong, head of the public transport management section of Zhongshan's transportation bureau.

Over the past year, the number of passengers from the Pearl River's western bank traveling to Shenzhen Airport has also doubled, according to Sun.

From July 2024 to May 2025, Zhongshan received 25.21 million visitors, marking a 26.94 percent year-on-year increase, according to statistics from Zhongshan's bureau of culture, radio, television and tourism.
